Frequently Asked Questions Regarding the
UW-Stout Foreign Language Policy

1. Are the tests required?

No. They are recommended if you would like to continue in French or Spanish.

2. Are the placement decisions binding?

                    No.

3. Do students receive credit for taking the tests?

No. The tests are for placement only. Students who complete their first college French or Spanish course with a grade of B or better are eligible for retro credits in lower level courses. They should talk to their first college language teacher if they are interested in this option.

4. What is the policy on AP scores?

A score of 3, 4, or 5 on an AP test gives the student credit in certain courses.

5. If a student took an AP test in French or Spanish, should she/he still take the placement test?

Placement decisions can be made based on a UW-Stout transcript which shows AP credits. Results of a placement test may provide useful information at an earlier time for incoming students.

6. How do I get additional information about placement testing at UW-Stout?
