Frequently Asked Questions Regarding the
UW-Madison Foreign Language Policy

1. Are the tests required?

Yes, if the student intends to continue in the language. They are not required to verify units of high school language taken.

2. Are the placement decisions binding?

In French and German the placement scores are advisory. In Spanish they are binding but retesting is allowed (the final placement decision is based on the most current score). If a student believes s/he has been misplaced on the basis of the placement test, s/he should talk to the foreign language consultant or to an advisor in the affected department. A retest may be suggested.

3. Do students receive credit for taking the test?

No.  The tests are for placement only.  Some Schools/Colleges at UW-Madison have a policy on retro credits which involves completing the course the student places into with a grade of B or better and thus being awarded credit for the course taken and all previous courses.  For more information on retrocredits, see the Language Institute site at: http://languageinstitute.wisc.edu/content/uw_students/uw_students.htm

4. What is the policy on AP scores?

A score of 3, 4, or 5 on an AP test gives the student credit in a given course. If the student wants retro credit, s/he must take the next higher course and receive a B or better to get credit for courses preceding the one with which the AP score is associated.

5. If a student took an AP test in French, German or Spanish, should s/he still take the placement test?

Yes. AP scores do not come to UW-Madison until well into July. Students should take the placement test and be prepared to take the course indicated. If the AP score is 3 or better and indicates a higher placement, the AP score takes precedence. If the AP score is 1 or 2, the placement test score determines placement. Also, some students are more comfortable taking the course indicated by the placement tests.
